Blogmas Day 19: Diet & Exercise During The Holidays

December 19, 2017

Christmas time is one of the few times a year I allow myself to eat whatever I like and miss a few days at the gym without feeling too guilty. The rest of the year I'm so focused on my diet and hitting the gym that I need time off! I imagine I'm not the only one in this boat and it can be frustrating to maintain your fitness and diet goals when there are so many nice foods and events that are involved in December. My biggest problem is once I get used to the food, the days at home and the chilled out behaviour it can be a bit tough getting back into a healthy routine, but I'll get there!

Last year I was very active at my local gym and even attended on Christmas Eve, New Years Eve and the day I broke up for Christmas from college; people all around me complimented me on my dedication during what is known to be a time for relaxing and enjoyment. This year I plan to do the same but if I don't then so what? I know I eat healthy almost every single day and I exercise at every point I am able so is it really a biggie if I skip leg day to eat Christmas cake with my family? NOPE! It is perfectly okay to take a day off now and again and Christmas time is the perfect time to reflect on your success so far and treat yourself with kindness. If you're like me and have workout equipment at home then it may make it easier for you to get in those sessions and still have a relaxing home surrounding, but I make no promises because my house is usually too full of good food.
Gotta love a good kettlebell
When it comes to eating and dieting during Christmas I won't lie I get very paranoid very easily about putting on weight and I do tend to stress about it, but this year I'm going to do my best to give myself a break and allow myself a few days of a less regimented diet. Because I am very serious about my weight loss goal I will still attend to portion control best I can in an attempt to not overdo it but on the other hand if I do go over my calorie limit once or twice is it the end of the world? Probably not, that would be a boring apocalypse. Obviously this is my first Christmas as a vegan so I'll be trying out new foods, new recipes and even new alcohol so everything I do consume I will be paying close attention too anyway. Christmas Day is my "no rules" day though, I plan to eat twice my own body weight in roast potatoes and no one can stop me...unless we run out, then in that case my plan failed.

All in all I try my best to stay healthy around Christmas time but if I end up spending two or three days in a sugar coma with a handful of Twiglets it won't be the worst thing to happen, we all deserve a reward for our hard work now and again and Christmas is definitely mine!

  1. This is such a challenging time of the year to stick to health & fitness goals. It sounds like you have the right attitude and not being too hard on yourself. As my gym is closed over Christmas I’m planning a few winter walks to balance out all those delicious extra Christmas calories! The gym will always be there for me in January he he. Brilliant post Zara and have a fabulous Christmas! xx

  3. My gym was close for 10 days this month for reconstruction. It was inconvenient for this time of year as I am eating more and more. However, there is so much new equipment and I went last night so excited to work out again after a bit of time off.
